The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan has recently announced that criminal landlords who exploit their tenants will be named and shamed on a new online database to protect the private renters of London. The new database will be created in partnership with the London boroughs and published on the Mayor’s website for all to see.
The Mayor hopes that the name and shame list will act as a deterrent to dishonest landlords, yet serve the purpose for renters to be able to check a potential landlord or letting agent prior to moving in to a property. Sadiq Khan recently expressed his dismay and said “I refuse to stand by as thousands of Londoners suffer sky-high rents and horrendous living conditions in a city they call home”.
The database will be available this Autumn with information provided by six boroughs of London: Camden, Newham, Brent, Southwark, Kingston and Sutton. Other boroughs in London will be added and made available to the database early next year.
It is currently unclear whether the name and shame database will contain landlords or organisations that have been convicted of fire safety breaches following prosecutions. Here at Fire FM, we would hope that this will soon be clarified, as this is a common act of dishonest landlords who risk the health and safety of their tenants.
