Extinguishing Fire: Smothering

In order to extinguish a fire by smothering we need to remove the OXYGEN from the fire. This can also be done in two main ways, either by using a fire blanket or an extinguisher. The aim is to prevent oxygen or air getting to the fire. To use a fire blanket you must ensure your safety at all times by making sure your fingers are not exposed to any part of the fire. Place the blanket over the fire, wrap it around as much as possible and leave it to cool.

As you can see from the triangle of fire, removing the OXYGEN has now extinguished the fire.

Fire extinguishers used to smother a fire include a C02 or a foam.
